ICAN Introduces Global Accounting Initiative in Nepal (GAIN)
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN) has officially launched the Global Accounting Initiative in Nepal (GAIN), a landmark project aimed at transforming Nepal into a competitive global hub for accounting, auditing, and financial service outsourcing.
The initiative focuses on employment generation, income growth through service exports, and branding Nepal as a trusted international outsourcing destination for accounting and financial services.
The project was formally unveiled during a special programme organized in Kathmandu, marking a significant milestone for Nepal’s professional services sector.
Objectives of the GAIN Project
The GAIN project has been designed with long-term economic and employment goals. Its key objectives include:
Branding Nepal as a reliable global accounting outsourcing destination
Enhancing the international competitiveness of Nepali accounting and audit firms
Developing strategic global partnerships
Creating sustainable, high-value employment opportunities
Increasing foreign currency inflow through service exports
According to ICAN, the project aims to create 50,000 jobs annually within five years and 150,000 jobs within the next 10 years, while generating approximately NPR 80 billion per year through accounting and financial service exports.
Focus Areas Under the GAIN Initiative
To ensure global competitiveness, the GAIN project prioritizes the following key areas:
1. Regulatory and Institutional Framework Development
ICAN plans to strengthen policies and institutional mechanisms to support accounting outsourcing, including clarity in compliance, licensing, and cross-border service delivery.
2. Secure Digital Infrastructure
Development of secure, world-class digital infrastructure is a core component, ensuring data confidentiality, cybersecurity, and international compliance standards.
3. World-Class Human Resource Training
The project emphasizes training accounting professionals according to international best practices, including IFRS, global audit standards, and accounting software expertise.
4. Quality Assurance and Service Delivery
Maintaining high service quality is critical to compete with established outsourcing destinations such as India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

The GAIN project also aims to promote innovation by establishing:
Accounting and outsourcing hubs
Digital service platforms
Incubation and startup support centers
These initiatives are expected to encourage entrepreneurship and attract both domestic and foreign clients seeking cost-effective and high-quality accounting services.
ICAN President Highlights Nepal’s Global Potential
Speaking at the launch event, ICAN President Nil Bahadur Saru Magar stated that the GAIN project would be implemented as a regular ICAN program from the next fiscal year.
He highlighted Nepal’s strong potential to compete globally, noting that countries like India and the Philippines have successfully built outsourcing economies.
“An environment should be created where organizations from different countries can receive accounting services while professionals remain in Nepal,” he said.
He further emphasized that skill development, policy clarity, and regulatory support are essential to establish Nepal as the outsourcing hub of South Asia.
Alignment With ICAN’s Five-Year Strategy (2081–2085)
ICAN Deputy Director Santosh Bista shared that the Five-Year Strategic Plan (2081–2085) is currently under implementation and aligns closely with the objectives of the GAIN project.
This strategy focuses on institutional strengthening, international collaboration, and capacity building within Nepal’s accounting profession.
